Radio 2 presenter Sara Cox set off Monday morning on the demanding 135-mile Great Northern Marathon Challenge, starting from Kielder Forest. The five-day expedition marks BBC Children In Need's longest-ever challenge.
Locals gathered to cheer her on, joined by more unusual supporters, including alpacas and a local bagpiper who played as the event began.
“I'm feeling good. I'm feeling more relaxed than I have been for weeks because I've been so nervous in the buildup, but now we are actually here and we're going to do it, I feel good thanks. I mean, the rain is not great. There's a lot of heavy drizzle, it has paused momentarily but my toes are already soggy.”
After months of focused training, Cox began her trek carrying a Pudsey Bear backpack that weighs only 270 grams. Her mission is to take Pudsey — the BBC Children In Need mascot — from the border at Kielder Forest to Pudsey in Leeds by Friday, symbolically connecting the start and heart of the charity’s efforts.
Sara Cox launched her toughest BBC charity challenge yet — a five-day, 135-mile run from Kielder to Leeds, blending endurance with a dash of Yorkshire spirit.
