Armenian Opposition Mayor Arrested Amid Protests
Law-enforcement authorities arrested Vartan Ghukasian, the opposition mayor of Gyumri, Armenia's second largest city, sparking angry protests by his supporters.
Security forces raided the Gyumri municipality building, blocking its entrances and trying to detain Ghukasian and several other local government officials.
“Join us, speak up, don’t stay silent,'” he said in a social media post as hundreds of his angry supporters rallied outside the building cordoned off by police.
Ghukasian appealed to local residents to “stand by our city and our dignity” as supporters inside the building did not let law-enforcement authorities take him away.
The arrest came three weeks after Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian pledged to “throw out” Ghukasian.
