HISTORICALLY SPEAKING WITH ED COLEMAN: Deer were never extinct in Nova Scotia

According to a biologist, deer are native to Nova Scotia.

This is the history of the red deer in Nova Scotia by the author, who unaided and of his own accord, secured and imported what is now known all over western Nova Scotia as ‘Daley’s deer.’

John Daley wrote to the surveyor general in 1893 about his experience live-trapping 11 deer in New Brunswick and releasing them in Digby and Yarmouth in 1894. This event is often cited as the introduction of the white-tailed deer in the province, which was previously thought to be extinct.

However, in a recent presentation before the Kentville Historical Society, David MacInnes questioned the cause of the supposed extinction of deer.

Author's summary: Deer were never extinct in Nova Scotia, according to a biologist.
