Etiquette specialists consulted after the interview concluded that, despite differing opinions among observers, there is nothing improper in Meghan’s decision to use her Duchess of Sussex title.
They stressed that using a British aristocratic title, even outside the United Kingdom, fits within accepted etiquette and does not breach protocol on its own.
Individual choice of form of address
Etiquette expert Myka Meier explained that, from a decorum standpoint, using a British title in both social and professional settings around the world, including in the United States, is neither unusual nor inappropriate.
Meier emphasized that the way each member of the royal family prefers to be addressed is ultimately a personal choice, noting that Meghan’s title is her formal style and that teams around such figures typically follow the individual’s preferred form of introduction.
“The decision regarding how each royal family member prefers to be addressed ultimately rests with that individual.”
Context of ongoing debate
The renewed focus on Meghan’s title came after criticism from some royal watchers who questioned her continued use of “Duchess of Sussex” following her and Prince Harry’s departure from full-time royal duties in 2020.
Despite this commentary, experts reiterated that protocol does not require her to stop using the title, and that introducing her as the Duchess of Sussex is considered acceptable within etiquette norms.
