American Legion Volunteers to Fly Flags for Veterans Day

It’s time to show your colors: red, white, and blue, the emblematic colors of our flag and a symbol of freedom and service. These colors have been official since June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress passed the Flag Act. They proudly wave over battlefields, government buildings, schools, and cemeteries across the nation.

"The colors were assigned meaning by the Continental Congress in 1782. Secretary Charles Thomson stated that red represented valor and bravery, white stood for purity and innocence, and blue symbolized vigilance, perseverance, and justice."

Preserving Flag Traditions at Graceland Cemetery

Daily Freeman Journal photographer Kolleen Taylor captured American Legion members Gene Williams and Steve Struchen demonstrating the correct way to handle the American Flag. LuAnn Jackson reads the symbolism behind each fold during the flag-folding process.

This activity took place during a workday dedicated to repairing many flags damaged by wind and other elements at Graceland Cemetery. Members of the American Legion frequently repeat this process at schools to educate young people and uphold the respect the flag deserves from citizens and the military.

Continuing a Patriotic Tradition

The American Legion and numerous volunteers will ensure that the flags fly again this weekend, honoring Veterans Day and maintaining the spirit of patriotism that is celebrated year-round.

The flag's colors symbolize more than just fabric; they embody the enduring values and sacrifices that unite the nation.
