Two-hour South Auckland police pursuit ends in arrest

A 41-year-old man was taken into custody following a two-hour police pursuit on a motorbike across South Auckland. He had two existing arrest warrants and will appear today at the Manukau District Court.

Authorities stated that the man faces charges including dangerous driving, failure to stop, and several other related offences. The pursuit took place after officers noticed a motorbike with an expired licence from 2019 traveling on Great South Rd, Takanini, around 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

“The rider has failed to stop and instead performed a U-turn on Manuroa Rd and fled,” said Counties Manukau South area prevention inspector Matt Hoyes.

The Police Eagle helicopter tracked the motorbike as it sped through multiple South Auckland suburbs, reserves, and walkways for nearly two hours, Hoyes added.

The chase ended at Sharland Park, where the rider got stuck in wet grass. He attempted to escape on foot but eventually surrendered and was detained by officers.

“Other road users and members of the public should not expect to have their safety put at risk as it was last night,” Hoyes stated.
