Arrests Amid Church-State Tensions in Armenia
Armenian law-enforcement authorities have arrested the brother and nephew of Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II on suspicion of committing a crime.
Attorney Ara Zohrabyan stated that a decision was made to detain Catholicos' brother, Gevorg Nersisyan, and his son, Hambardzum, over the weekend.
The Investigative Committee's spokesperson, Kima Avdalyan, confirmed that a public criminal prosecution was launched against the two individuals under Article 211 of the Criminal Code.
Article 211 deals with coercing someone to conduct or refrain from conducting campaign activities or otherwise obstructing such activities.
This development comes amid mounting tensions between the government and the Armenian Apostolic Church.
