Gus Balon's Restaurant Marks 60 Years as a Tucson Breakfast Staple

Gus Balon's celebrates 60 years of homemade comfort food in Tucson. Owner Kelli Phillips honors her grandfather's legacy with scratch-made classics and a loyal community.

Gus Balon's Restaurant takes breakfast seriously. With scratch-made classics, the breakfast diner draws in regulars from far and wide. Some of those regulars have made Gus part of their daily routine for over 50 years now.

"I have owned it, actually, for 20 years, but I've grown up in the business since Gus is my grandfather,"

Owner and general manager Kelli Phillips has worked in the restaurant since childhood. Her grandfather opened the original Gus's Catalina on Grant and Country Club in the 1960s. The restaurant later consolidated to its current location at 6027 E. 22nd St., where it has stood since 1965.

Phillips credits her staff and long-term customers for keeping the business strong. Author's summary: Tucson's breakfast staple turns 60.
