Man who drove off Santa Cruz Wharf was registered sex offender

A 65-year-old man who died after driving a van off the Santa Cruz Wharf on Sunday morning was a registered sex offender.

According to the State of California Megan’s Law website, William Thomas Westerman was convicted in 1994 of lewd acts against a child under 14 and released from prison in 2015.

Westerman had since become a full-time caregiver for his mother, according to his partner.
