A rare and malodorous marvel is drawing crowds to the New York Botanical Garden, as the infamous corpse flower reveals its massive bloom just in time for Halloween.
The Amorphophallus titanum, known for its towering size and pungent odor, began unfurling in the Bronx garden’s Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, filling the air with a scent often compared to rotting meat.
The foul aroma and beautiful bloom is fleeting, lasting just 24 to 36 hours.
Despite the short duration, visitors are flocking to see and smell the spectacle before it fades. The plant’s notorious stench mimics the smell of decomposition to attract pollinators that feed on dead animals, helping the species reproduce.
