Graham Platner, a Maine Senate candidate, initially seemed like a solution to the Democrats' electoral struggles. His biography and persona embodied blue collar machismo, which is lacking in the modern Democratic Party.

- He works as an oysterman, giving his populism an air of authenticity.
He could supposedly take on MAGA on its own terms by arguing that left-wing populism, not Trumpism, was the real solution to the heartland’s troubles.
However, Platner has become an embarrassment to liberals after online posts revealed he declared himself a communist and supporter of Antifa violence. He also has a Totenkopf skull-and-crossbones tattoo, associated with the Nazis' paramilitary wing.
