A new automated stacking system at London Gateway is set to improve truck turnaround times.
Using BOXBAY's high-bay storage technology, the £170 million project will store empty containers up to 16 tiers high, increasing efficiency and reducing re-handling at one of Britain's busiest ports.
The Empty Superstack, developed by BOXBAY, a joint venture between DP World and Germany's SMS group, utilizes High Bay Storage (HBS) technology to handle empty containers within a fully enclosed, automated facility.
The system operates much like a vending machine for containers.
According to DP World, the new system will allow automated stacking cranes to work more efficiently, speeding up truck operations and reducing waiting times.
