From Mamma Mia to Amélie: The vitality of the musical

The Vitality of Musical Theatre

Big musical theatre shows, such as The Lion King, Matilda, and Wicked, continue to thrive.

In Aotearoa, local and touring shows are popular with audiences, despite the lack of a West End or Broadway.

Amélie the Musical

Amélie the Musical is set to premiere in Australasia in November in Poneke, produced by Witch, an alternative musical theatre company.

The show, based on the popular film, first opened on Broadway in 2017 and the West End in 2019, and later in 2021 after Covid.

Amélie naturally focuses on the beloved mischievous dreamer Amelie Poulain of the popular film.

Rachel McSweeney will play the role of Amelie Poulain in Wellington.

Author's summary: Musical theatre remains popular.
