Intel Foundry Wins Microsoft Maia 3 Griffin AI Chip Order
Intel has reportedly been chosen by Microsoft to build the next-generation Maia 3 "Griffin" AI accelerator using its 18A manufacturing process.
According to a report by SemiAccurate's Charlie Demerjian, this marks one of Intel Foundry's most important deals so far.
Microsoft's earlier Maia 100 chips were made by TSMC using the N5 process and advanced CoWoS-S packaging, featuring:
- 820 mm² size
- up to 700 watts power consumption
- 64 GB of HBM2E memory with 1.8 TB/s bandwidth
- 3 PetaOPS at 6-bit precision
- twelve 400 GbE ports (600 GB/s total) and a PCIe 5.0 x8 interface
With Maia 3, Microsoft is betting that Intel's process can push those numbers further while keeping power draw in check.
