A 17-mile stretch of the I-5 freeway in Southern California was shut down on Saturday due to a military event involving live ammunition at Camp Pendleton.
The event was part of the U.S. Marine Corps 250th anniversary celebration. The freeway closure, which impacted both sides of the road from Harbor Drive in Oceanside to Basilone Road near San Onofre, caused heavy traffic congestion.
The military event will involve "live ammunition being discharged by the federal government over the freeway."
A video provided by California officials showed live munitions being fired near the freeway on Friday, apparently as a practice run. The freeway has since reopened on Saturday afternoon.
