Data center power demand is heating up; here’s where Virginia’s gubernatorial candidates on the issue

Data Center Power Demand in Virginia

Data center power demand is increasing, with one hyper-scale data center requiring as much power as 2 million homes. Virginia currently has approximately 3.6 million homes.

A recent tour of a new hyper-scale power solution manufacturing facility in Henrico County highlighted the significant power demands of data centers. Both gubernatorial candidates recognize the link between data center demand and Virginia's economic future, but they have differing ideas on how to address it.

"This is the world's first and most compact and dense power distribution unit,"

said Dennis Strieter, co-founder of Hyper Solutions, during a tour with Governor Glenn Youngkin. The unit delivers 1.3 million watts, equivalent to the power needed for about 2 thousand homes.

Author's summary: Virginia's data center power demand is rising.
