Indonesia Detects Radiation at Clove Farm
Indonesian authorities have found traces of radioactivity at a clove farm on Sumatra island, according to a government spokesperson.
This discovery comes as Jakarta expands its investigation into the detection of Cesium-137 contamination in spices from Indonesia by the US health authority.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) detected the presence of Cesium-137 in a sample of cloves from PT Natural Java Spice.
- The FDA also detected the radioactive isotope in a sample of frozen shrimp from Indonesia in August.
- Inspection teams were sent to a processing facility and farms on Java and Sumatra islands as part of the investigation.
- Traces of radioactivity were only found at the clove farm in Lampung, Sumatra.
The government has banned the farm from selling its cloves as a precautionary measure, said task force spokesperson Bara Hasibuan.
