Richard Gordon Hatcher served as Gary's first Black mayor for five terms, spanning 20 years. He was known for finding innovative solutions to urban problems and served as a spokesperson for civil rights.

Hatcher is also credited with helping to grow the city of Merrillville. His legacy is remembered by his three daughters, who spoke at the renaming event on Monday.

He is one of the country's first African American mayors.
