On November 11, 2025, a Turkish military C-130 Hercules transport aircraft carrying 20 personnel crashed near the Azerbaijan-Georgia border, within Georgia’s Sighnaghi municipality. The plane had departed from Ganja, Azerbaijan, and was returning to Turkey when it vanished from radar and fell to the ground trailing smoke.
Search and rescue operations are currently led by Turkish, Georgian, and Azerbaijani authorities. Unmanned aerial vehicles were deployed by Turkey to assist in locating survivors. Neither the cause of the crash nor the number of casualties has been disclosed yet.
Officials from Turkey, Azerbaijan, and the United States have expressed condolences and support to the victims’ families and the governments involved.
“The Georgian Interior Ministry and air traffic authorities confirmed the crash site approximately 5 kilometers from the Azerbaijan border and indicated no distress signal was sent before the plane went down.”
According to footage circulated by Azerbaijani media, the aircraft was seen spiraling out of control with trails of white and black smoke before impact. Reports also suggest that Azerbaijani personnel might have been among those onboard.
