Josh Hutcherson joined Rachel Sennott’s HBO comedy I Love LA relatively late, stepping in during a recasting after the initial pilot was filmed. Despite this, he had significant influence in developing his character, Dylan, the longterm live-in boyfriend of Sennott’s character, Maia.
Hutcherson worked closely with Rachel Sennott and co-showrunner Emma Barrie to build Dylan’s personality. They aimed to avoid the stereotype of Dylan as a dull or uninteresting partner.
"We very quickly all got on the same page, which was we didn’t want Dylan to just be the square, the boring, nothing guy," Hutcherson told TheWrap. "We wanted to find some textures to him that felt funny and dynamic and different, rather than something that we’ve seen before."
The character of Dylan evolved from initial versions portrayed by Miles Robbins in the pilot. Hutcherson and the creative team explored Dylan’s core identity, motivations, and relationship with Maia, deepening the character beyond the script’s original scope.
Hutcherson described this collaboration as a process that expanded the character’s depth and coherence, making Dylan more engaging and unique.
Author's summary: Josh Hutcherson helped redefine his "I Love LA" character, Dylan, making him distinct and dynamic by collaboratively exploring his deeper traits beyond the original script.
