Environment Canada issued warnings for strong winds and heavy rainfall affecting North Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii, and surrounding North Coast areas this weekend.
Strong southeasterly winds between 70 and 90 km/h, with gusts up to 110 km/h over exposed coastal zones, are expected on North Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii. These warnings, first released on Friday night, continue through Sunday morning.
“An intensifying frontal system will impact the B.C. coast today and overnight into Sunday morning,” states Environment Canada.
The wind gusts began Saturday morning and should subside by Sunday, but there may be power outages and disruptions to services and travel in affected areas.
DriveBC advises motorists on the North Coast to exercise increased caution on roads during this period due to the weather conditions.
“Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible. Stay away from fallen power lines,” warns Environment Canada.
Saturday morning brought rainfall warnings for Haida Gwaii and North Coast communities such as Kitimat, Stewart, and Terrace. Total precipitation between 50 and 85 millimeters is expected through late Sunday.
The approaching frontal system will cause strong winds and significant rainfall over the North Coast, posing risks of power outages, travel disruptions, and property damage.
