Ian Leavers, former president of the Queensland Police Union, was found dead at his home in Brisbane. He was 57 years old.
Leavers led the police union from 2009 to 2024, serving for 15 years. Police found him just before 10 a.m. on Monday in Mount Ommaney, Brisbane’s south-west, with no suspicious circumstances reported. Authorities are continuing their investigations.
Following his union leadership, Leavers was appointed Queensland's first Cross-Border Commissioner in August 2024, supporting border communities.
“He earned the respect of Queenslanders for saying it how it was, and always standing up for the police service he loved,”
said Premier David Crisafulli. He added,
“He was dedicated, principled and driven to make a difference for this state.”
Crisafulli noted Leavers' leadership during some of Queensland’s most tragic and defining moments.
“A long-serving and respected leader within the policing community for more than three decades,”
said the Police Federation of Australia in remembrance of Leavers.
His career left a lasting impact on both the police force and the communities he served.
Ian Leavers, a respected leader and advocate for Queensland police, passed away unexpectedly, leaving a strong legacy of principled service and community support.
