New 2026 Toyota Hilux unveiled! Australian release date, engines and everything else you need to know

New 2026 Toyota Hilux Unveiled

Toyota has revealed the ninth-generation Hilux, which it describes as the "most Australian Hilux ever developed." This model is set to arrive in Australian showrooms within weeks.

Platform and Powertrain

Unlike the US-market Tacoma, which switched to the GA-F platform in 2022, the new Hilux continues to use the IMV platform that supported the previous generation. The core cab design remains mostly unchanged.

The 2.8-litre '1GD' turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine is carried over, producing 150 kW and 500 Nm of torque when paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Manual versions have torque limited to 420 Nm.

Model Variants

The lineup includes 16 diesel variants available in single-, extra-, and dual-cab configurations. Both 4×2 and part-time 4×4 drivetrains will be offered to cover various needs.

"Toyota has finally unveiled what it’s calling the ‘most Australian Hilux ever developed’, which is set to go on sale in Aussie showrooms in a matter of weeks."

The ninth-generation Hilux focuses closely on the preferences of its Australian buyers, maintaining proven mechanicals while introducing future-forward powertrain options.

Author's summary: Toyota’s 2026 Hilux blends proven diesel power with upcoming electric and hydrogen models, preserving its Australian reliability alongside modern upgrades.
