Sara Cox from Bolton has begun an extraordinary effort, taking on the equivalent of five marathons in five days to raise money for Children in Need. The BBC Radio 2 presenter will cover 135 miles on foot, stretching across four counties.
After countless hours of training, Sara is ready for the big event. Posting to her 545,000 Instagram followers, she shared:
“Welcome to the calm before the storm. I’m watching Countryfile, in Northumberland, having a lovely time. Tomorrow (Monday), I’ll start my epic Great Northern Marathon Challenge – 135 miles – from Kielder Forest all the way to Pudsey in Leeds. Thanks for all your messages on Instagram, they’ve given me such a boost.”
The challenge officially started this morning at 8:15 am, with Sara joining Scott Mills on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show. Despite a slight illness, she is determined:
“I’ll be up super early, my knees will be a-knocking but I am going to give it as much welly as I can despite having a slight lurgy. Let’s do this and raise loads of money for Children in Need.”
Sara’s challenge follows similar charity efforts from fellow Bolton natives and Radio 2 colleagues Paddy McGuinness and Vernon Kay, who each completed major challenges in the past two years, raising millions for Children in Need.
Sara Cox begins her formidable five-day marathon challenge, inspired by previous charity efforts, to support Children in Need and raise substantial funds despite health challenges.
