Super Typhoon Fung-wong path, maps and warnings as storm nears landfall

Super Typhoon Fung-wong Nears Philippine Landfall

Super Typhoon Fung-wong, known locally as Uwan, approached the northeastern coast of the Philippines on Sunday as authorities prepared for another destructive storm following Typhoon Kalmaegi.

Recent Typhoon Impact

Earlier this month, Typhoon Kalmaegi struck the central Philippines, leaving severe damage in its wake. The storm killed more than 220 people in the country before moving to Vietnam, where five additional deaths were reported.

Emergency Declaration

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of emergency on Thursday as Manila continued recovering from Kalmaegi while bracing for the impact of Fung-wong.

Forecast and Warnings

Forecasters predicted that the super typhoon would make landfall late Sunday or early Monday in Aurora Province, northeast of Manila. The storm was expected to maintain its peak strength as it moved past Polillo Island toward Aurora.

“Destructive typhoon-force winds” have battered northern and central Luzon as the typhoon passes over the land, PAGASA said in an 11 p.m. update.

Rainfall and Risk Areas

Authorities issued the highest-level warnings for Aurora, Nueva Vizcaya, and Camarines Norte. PAGASA projected over 200 millimeters (nearly 8 inches) of rainfall across Luzon on Sunday and Monday, likely causing widespread flooding and landslides.
