Aaron Rai held his composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, defeating Tommy Fleetwood on the first play-off hole. The 30-year-old sealed the victory with a birdie from just over eight feet, repeating his previous Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, also against Fleetwood.
Rai began the final round with a one-shot lead over Fleetwood and Nicolai Hojgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after an unpredictable final round of five-under, which included seven birdies and two bogeys. Although he missed a 10-foot putt that could have clinched the win in regulation play, his steady nerve prevailed in the play-off.
Fleetwood, who made an eagle and three birdies during his clean 67, briefly led after a birdie on the 16th hole but ultimately had to settle for a share as Rai caught up. Hojgaard followed closely with a 65 featuring eight birdies and a single bogey.
"This is a huge event. This is one of the biggest events we have on the DP World Tour. To win this week, to have a chance going into the weekend, is great. Still a long way to go and a lot of really good players. Yeah, we'll give it our best and see how it comes."
Rai, ranked 30th in the world and last year's Wyndham Championship winner, emphasized the importance of the event and his determination heading into the final rounds.
Aaron Rai edged Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic Abu Dhabi play-off, capturing his second Rolex Series title with precise, composed play under pressure.
