The Wardrobe of Queen Elizabeth II Gets Its Largest Outing Yet

The nine-decade-spanning wardrobe of Queen Elizabeth II is now on display at Buckingham Palace. This exhibition highlights English designers prominently, featuring around 200 pieces that chronicle the royal’s life in style—from her wedding dress to her clear plastic raincoat.

The 1960 Wedding Dress for Princess Margaret's Wedding

Choosing an outfit for a sibling’s wedding is challenging, but it becomes even more daunting when you are the queen and the event is broadcast to an entire nation and the Commonwealth. Such was the case for Queen Elizabeth II before the 1960 wedding of her sister, Princess Margaret, to photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones.

Having been queen for seven years at that point, Elizabeth entrusted British designer Norman Hartnell—who also created her own wedding dress—with designing her ensemble. Hartnell fashioned a light blue gown featuring a crinoline skirt and a bolero jacket worn over it.

“An image of Elizabeth, steady and devoted to her family and to the British people, prevailed.”

The queen was photographed by famed British photographer Cecil Beaton wearing this outfit, paired with gloves, a fabric rose hat, and pearls. The wedding was watched by approximately 300 million people worldwide.
