James A. Garfield, His Assassin, Front and Center in “Death by Lightning”

Writer and producer Mike Makowsky devoted months to securing government clearance to access original historical materials. His persistence set the stage for the new Netflix limited series “Death by Lightning.”

The four-part series mirrors the intertwined fates of America’s 20th president, James A. Garfield, and his assassin, Charles J. Guiteau. Garfield’s presidency, cut tragically short in 1881, is recounted alongside the story of Guiteau — a man driven by delusion and obsession.

“Death by Lightning” reimagines the events that led to Garfield’s assassination and explores how ideals, medicine, and madness collided in a defining moment of U.S. history.

Michael Shannon, known for his roles in “Man of Steel” and “Take Shelter,” portrays the steadfast and intellectual Garfield, while Matthew Macfadyen, from “Pride & Prejudice” and “Succession,” plays the unstable assassin Guiteau. The series is adapted from Candice Millard’s critically acclaimed 2011 book, Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President.
