Emotions ran high as Carlton forward Mia Austin was surrounded by her teammates after scoring a goal during the Blues’ strong 41-point victory against West Coast on Saturday, advancing them to the semi-finals.
The moment became especially moving when Austin dedicated her goal to her late cousin, Ben Austin, who tragically passed away at just 17 after being struck by a cricket ball during warm-ups for a T20 match last week.
As the siren sounded for three-quarter time, Austin took a decisive mark, kicked truly, and was quickly embraced by her teammates. Overcome by emotion, she could be seen wiping away tears in memory of Ben.
“Your heart breaks with this vision, doesn’t it?” said Abbey Holmes on Channel 7. “You can see how much this means to Mia Austin ... it gives me goosebumps, just seeing the love and support around her.”
Alister Nicholson added: “A moment of great poignancy on the three-quarter time siren. It has been such a challenging time for the Austin family following the tragic passing of young Ben in the cricket training accident.”
Mia Austin’s heartfelt tribute to her late cousin Ben during Carlton’s victory offered a powerful moment of emotion and unity that resonated far beyond the AFL field.
