'It's a reality': Living in the shadow of younger brother Jimmy Barnes

Living in the Shadow of Younger Brother Jimmy Barnes

John Swan, known as Swanee, 73, is the older brother of Jimmy Barnes and the first to pave the way for their musical family. He has shared memories of past hardships, struggles with drugs, and his relationship with Jimmy, revealing the lasting effect of his younger brother's fame.

“Not many people touch on it, and I think they’re just polite,”

Swanee said, referring to the shadow cast by Jimmy's success. Despite this, he has always been close to and proud of his siblings, never feeling threatened by competition.

“I didn’t really give a stuff, because I got offered the gig before he did,”

John explained, recalling his early music career choices. He stayed as a drummer in his band because he earned "$25 a week" and couldn't risk losing that income.

He was surprised by the formation of a new band involving Ian Moss and Steve Prestwich but eventually joined to sing with Jimmy six months later. However, he soon realized that his presence wasn’t essential.

“I was smart enough to realise that this band doesn’t need me,”

Swanee reflected on his departure. He then pursued a successful solo career and joined other bands, including replacing Angry Anderson in The Party Boys, with whom he achieved a number one hit.

Summary

John Swan (Swanee) forged his own path in music despite living under the shadow of his famous brother, Jimmy Barnes, finding success through solo work and other bands.
