Tokenized Real-World Assets: Infrastructure, Mechanics, and Compliance

Real-world assets are increasingly moving on-chain, transforming global finance and settlement through tokenization and requiring robust compliance controls.

The Shift to Programmable Settlement Infrastructure

We are experiencing rapid growth in moving real economic value onto programmable settlement platforms. Stablecoins demonstrated the ability to transfer value globally with near-instant finality, auditability, and interoperability. Now, focus is shifting to key financial assets such as US Treasuries, credit portfolios, deposits, real estate, commodities, funds, trade finance receivables, and structured products.

Operational Reality Drives Tokenization

This transformation is driven not by speculation, but by the need for operational efficiency. Programmable ledgers enable more efficient transfer, clearance, pledging, and monitoring of assets than traditional legacy systems. The goal is to modernize the recordkeeping and settlement infrastructure underpinning finance, rather than reinvent finance itself.

How Tokenization Functions

Tokenization does not change the underlying asset, but alters how ownership is recorded and transferred. A real-world asset, such as a Treasury bill or money market instrument, is initially held by a custodian or recorded off-chain. Then, a legal structure—commonly a trust or special purpose vehicle—is created to maintain a clear and compliant connection between the off-chain asset and its digital token.
