Flights and ground operations at Brussels Airport were temporarily halted on Thursday after multiple drones were detected near the area, raising security concerns across Belgium. The spokesperson for Skeyes, the air traffic control authority, confirmed the suspension but did not disclose the exact number of drones involved.
Local media also reported drone activity in other regions of the country, including near a military base. These sightings prompted the Belgian government to convene an emergency meeting involving top ministers and national security officials.
"Recent drone incidents suggest a coordinated attack," said Belgium’s defence minister, referring to the forced closures of airports and a military air base earlier in the week.
In response, Germany announced that the Bundeswehr would assist Belgium with short-notice counter-drone capabilities.
Across Europe, drone disruptions have become increasingly frequent, temporarily shutting down airports in multiple countries. Some European officials have attributed these incidents to what they describe as "hybrid warfare" actions possibly linked to Russia, though Moscow has firmly denied involvement.
Belgium halted airport operations after drones were spotted near crucial sites, sparking a security crisis that led to emergency government actions and international military support.
