The four-episode Netflix limited series Death by Lightning portrays the true story of James Garfield (Michael Shannon), an Ohio Congressman who reluctantly became the 20th President of the United States, and Charles Guiteau (Matthew Macfadyen), a fan obsessed with Garfield, convinced he was the key to his success.
Guiteau, a political office-seeker with delusions of grandeur, gradually descended into mental instability, ultimately shooting Garfield. Although Garfield did not die immediately from the gunshot, he succumbed to an infection six months later, ending his presidency and leaving his wife Lucretia (Betty Gilpin) a widow. Guiteau was executed by hanging.
In an interview with Collider, Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen shared their thoughts about the story and characters. Shannon also discussed his long friendship with actor Shea Whigham, who plays Roscoe Conkling in the series.
“He thought he was a hero.”
They explored Guiteau’s delusions and how many people today share similar dangerous beliefs. Shannon and Macfadyen spoke about the choices they made to authentically portray their roles and the chilling possibility that Garfield might have survived the shooting. They also described filming the intense gallows scene and the emotionally powerful interactions between Guiteau and Garfield’s widow.
Death by Lightning offers a gripping look at a tragic moment in American history and the complex figures involved.
