Novak Djokovic advanced to the Athens ATP final with a 6-3, 6-4 win over German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann on Friday. He will now face Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, who defeated Sebastian Korda 6-0, 5-7, 7-5 in the other semifinal.
The 38-year-old Serbian star needed just 79 minutes to secure victory and is set to meet a determined Musetti, who must win the final to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.
“I think it was the best tennis I’ve played this tournament,” Djokovic said. “Hanfmann poses a big threat because he serves well and plays aggressively, so I had to stay very focused.”
By defeating Hanfmann, Djokovic ended a streak of four semifinal losses at major and Masters tournaments — Roland Garros, Wimbledon, the US Open, and Shanghai. His previous semifinal win came at the Geneva clay-court event in May, where he went on to beat Hubert Hurkacz in the final to claim his 100th career singles title.
Only Roger Federer, with 103 titles, and Jimmy Connors, with 109, have more men’s singles victories than Djokovic.
Author’s summary: Djokovic reached the Athens final after a composed win over Hanfmann, reclaiming strong form ahead of his showdown with Musetti for a spot in Turin.
