Three inmates have been charged with the murder of Kyle Bevan, who was discovered dead in his cell at HMP Wakefield on Wednesday, 5 November. The accused — Mark Fellows, 45, Lee Newell, 56, and David Taylor, 63 — each appeared separately via video link at Leeds Magistrates' Court on Friday.
All three were remanded into custody and will next appear before Leeds Crown Court on Monday. They were seen wearing grey tracksuits during the brief hearings. Fellows and Newell spoke only to confirm their identities and understanding of the proceedings.
When asked if he understood the charges, Taylor said: "Absolutely not. I'm innocent."
Each hearing lasted just over a minute, with District Judge Charlotte Holland ordering that the men remain in custody until the pre-trial preparation hearing.
Kyle Bevan had been serving a life sentence of at least 28 years after being convicted in April 2023 for the murder of his partner’s two-year-old daughter, Lola James, in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. The child suffered fatal head injuries during a violent assault in 2020.
