Authority for Half-Staff Flag Orders

The President of the United States and the Governor of Idaho have the authority to direct U.S. and Idaho state flags to be flown at half-staff within Idaho for specific events.

Half-Staff Flag Directive

Flags are ordered at half-staff in honor of the passing of former Vice President Dick Cheney.

Legal Basis: Title 4, United States Code, Chapter 1

Flags shall be flown at half-staff for 30 days following the death of a President or former President.
Flags shall be at half-staff for 10 days from the death of the Vice President, Chief Justice, retired Chief Justice of the U.S., or Speaker of the House.
From the day of death until the day of interment, flags are lowered for an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or a Governor of a State, territory, or possession.
For a Member of Congress, flags are flown at half-staff on the day of death and the following day.
