Gators’ 7-foot-9 Rioux Makes Historic Debut

Florida’s 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux finally stepped onto the court against North Florida, marking his first appearance and officially becoming the tallest player in college basketball history.

Unforgettable Night in Gainesville

During the Gators’ dominant 104–64 victory at O’Connell Center, a crowd of 10,065 fans erupted with chants of “Oli, Oli, Oli,” celebrating the debut of the world’s tallest teenager. The occasion also marked the unveiling of Florida’s 2025 championship banner.

Head coach Todd Golden responded to the crowd’s energy by subbing Rioux in with just over two minutes left, as UF led 102–61.

“It felt great,” said Rioux. “The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.”

Making Basketball History

Although Rioux didn’t score or grab a rebound, his appearance was historic. At 7-foot-9, the 19-year-old Canadian surpassed former record holder Kenny George of UNC Asheville, who stood 7-foot-7 and played from 2006 to 2008.

Rioux also measures two inches taller than the tallest NBA players ever — Manute Bol and Gheorghe Muresan — and stands three inches above Yao Ming, Shawn Bradley, and Tacko Fall. He even exceeds San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama by four inches.

About Olivier Rioux

Rioux joined the Florida Gators in the summer of 2024 and quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his towering stature, upbeat attitude, and dedication to the team.
