Liberal leader Sussan Ley is facing increasing pressure amid speculation that her time as leader may be coming to an end. This follows intense questioning from the Canberra press and explosive comments from within her party.
Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson publicly expressed doubts, stating she “could not support things the way they are” and suggested that Ms. Ley was “losing support” within the party. These remarks have fueled rumors of a leadership challenge within the next year.
At a press conference in Canberra, Ms Ley was asked directly if her “days leading the party were numbered,” but she refused to address the speculation, instead focusing on criticizing the Albanese government over the cost of living.
“I value every single member of my team including the good Senator that you’ve just mentioned. In order to interrogate her view, you should probably ask her.”
Notably, Ms Ley could not name Senator Henderson when questioned about her comments.
Ms Ley emphasized her pride in her team, describing it as “a very proud team that represents Australian values.” She also highlighted the party's focus on resolving the net zero emissions issue, despite it creating divisions between moderates and conservatives.
The leadership of Sussan Ley is increasingly questioned by her party members, while she remains focused on party unity and policy challenges amid growing internal divisions.
