Antonio Brown, former Central Michigan University and NFL star, was arrested in Dubai and brought to Newark, New Jersey, where he is currently held awaiting extradition to Miami. Miami Police have confirmed that Brown faces an attempted murder charge linked to a May 16 shooting incident.
The case concerns an event following a celebrity boxing match in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood. Brown was briefly detained after shots were fired during an altercation. At the time, Brown posted on social media that he had been attacked by several individuals who tried to steal his jewelry and physically harm him.
“Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me. I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT AND WAS NOT ARRESTED,” Brown stated.
However, the Associated Press reported in June that Brown was later named in an arrest warrant. Authorities allege he grabbed a handgun from a security staff member and fired two shots at a man with whom he had fought earlier. The victim told investigators that one bullet grazed his neck.
Miami Police Chief Manuel Morales issued a statement around 7 p.m. on the 6th confirming Brown's custody in Newark, where Miami PD met him. Morales announced Brown will be soon extradited to Miami to face the charges.
“Let this serve as a clear message; no matter who you are or where you run, we will pursue the facts, identify you, locate you, and bring you to justice,” Morales said.
