Elijah Roche scored in the 88th minute and Marius Aiyenero netted a stoppage-time penalty as Canada achieved a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Uganda on Wednesday, marking their first-ever victory in nine FIFA U-17 World Cup appearances.
Uganda opened the scoring in the 25th minute through James Bogere, celebrating the country's debut at a FIFA tournament. However, Canada rallied late in Doha, Qatar. Roche, who had previously made a crucial defensive tackle, leapt high to head in Aghilas Sadek’s corner, leveling the score.
Moments later, a video review determined that Uganda’s John Asiimwe fouled Aiyenero inside the penalty box. The substitute, who represents Los Angeles FC 2, calmly converted the penalty past goalkeeper Gilbert Mazige in the 98th minute.
This triumph improved Canada’s overall record to 1–20–4 at the under-17 level. The nation, which hosted the tournament in 1987, had previously been outscored 71–13 across 25 matches, including one own goal by Argentina.
"Tonight is a proud moment for our program," said head coach Mike Vitulano. "We wanted to set a new benchmark for future generations and did just that."
"The boys showed incredible character to come from behind, fight their way back and find a way to win late. It's a testament to their belief and togetherness. We'll enjoy this moment, but our focus quickly shifts to the next match."
Canada’s under-17 squad made history with a late 2-1 win over Uganda, showcasing resilience, teamwork, and a new chapter in national youth football development.
