Victoria's highest court has ruled that Tony Mokbel, a notorious underworld figure, will not face additional prison time related to a methamphetamine trafficking operation.
The Court of Appeal re-sentenced Mokbel to time already served after overturning some of his previous convictions tied to the Lawyer X scandal. Mokbel, who is currently on bail, was re-sentenced this morning for a drug scheme he operated between 2006 and 2007 while evading Australian authorities in Greece.
Originally sentenced in 2012 to 30 years in prison, Mokbel's penalty included a 20-year term for the drug operation known as "Magnum." Following the appeal, the Court reduced this sentence to the time Mokbel has already served.
"Mokbel kissed his partner passionately at the conclusion of Thursday's hearing before departing the court, declining to comment to media."
Mokbel is expected to appear in court later this month for a separate drug-related case. This recent ruling marks a significant legal victory, bringing him closer to full freedom after spending over 6,500 days in custody.
Tony Mokbel’s recent appeal reduced his methamphetamine trafficking sentence, reflecting the ongoing impact of the Lawyer X scandal and moving him nearer to release after a prolonged custody period.
