‘Death by Lightning’ Review: Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen Headline Netflix’s Mostly Gripping, Slightly Rushed Presidential Assassination Thriller

‘Death by Lightning’ Review

Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen Lead Netflix's Presidential Assassination Thriller

The four-part James Garfield drama, executive produced by Weiss, also stars Betty Gilpin and Nick Offerman. This gripping series dives into political violence, portraying assassination attempts and their troubled perpetrators as a dark contrast to the American Dream.

For Stephen Sondheim fans, prolonged exposure to Death by Lightning may result in uncontrollable singing of the entirety of Assassins. Do not watch if you are allergic to Assassins. Possible side effects may include Sweeney Todd or Company.

Although Netflix may not be known for artistic integrity, it is surprising that Death by Lightning is available at all. Following the timid approach of shows like The Savant, Apple might have ignored this series or hidden it among many others with little promotion.

Similar to Sondheim’s Assassins and last year’s Manhunt, the series explores the uncomfortable intersection of political violence and celebrity culture. Created by Mike Makowsky and based on Candice Millard’s well-regarded Destiny of the Republic, it approaches this complex subject with cautious assurance.

After nearly three episodes, the series has effectively introduced Matthew Macfadyen as Charles J., setting the stage for the unfolding drama.

Author’s Summary
