Brian Hirtle expressed strong disappointment over Acadie-Annapolis MP Chris d'Entremont's recent move to join the Liberal Party, calling it a "self-serving" act.
The Viewmount resident, who supported d'Entremont through all three of his federal election victories and served as president of the Conservative electoral district association, was stunned by the news.
“I woke up from a nap and the phone lit up everywhere. It was all over the news that he was considering it,” Hirtle recalled. “I was as shocked as anybody.”
Hirtle emphasized the collective effort behind d'Entremont’s election success.
“It’s a slap in the face to the residents,” he said. “It takes a village to get an MP elected. It takes a community of hard-working folks from Argyle to Long Point Road. It’s a team effort.”
He praised the team’s pride in holding the Conservatives' only seat in Nova Scotia before d'Entremont's defection.
Though colleagues and friends in the past, Hirtle admitted he is unsure how their relationship will change going forward.
Hirtle shared concerns about younger voters who backed d'Entremont in April, many voting for the first time.
“He feels very betrayed,” Hirtle said.
Brian Hirtle views Chris d'Entremont's switch to the Liberals as a selfish act that disappoints the community and betrays loyal supporters.
