The Toronto Maple Leafs have suspended center David Kampf after he left their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. According to PuckPedia, Kampf is exploring options to return to the NHL, which could involve a trade or the termination of his current contract.
"Kampf had recently stepped away from the Marlies, largely due to dissatisfaction with playing in the AHL," reported PuckPedia.
The 29-year-old center believes he belongs in the NHL and has been searching for a pathway back, whether with the Leafs or another organization. The team expects a resolution soon, with possible outcomes including his return to the Marlies, a trade, or contract termination leading to unrestricted free agency.
PuckPedia compared his situation to that of Brandon Saad, who left the St. Louis Blues and joined the Vegas Golden Knights last season after securing his release.
Kampf was assigned to the AHL following training camp after failing to earn a roster spot, despite an early injury to Scott Laughton that might have opened an opportunity. Sources suggest that after losing favor with head coach Craig Berube during the playoffs, Kampf no longer appears to fit into the team’s long-term plans. His contract, seen as a burden, deterred other NHL teams when he cleared waivers before the season started.
David Kampf’s suspension reflects ongoing tension over his NHL ambitions and signals a likely parting of ways with Toronto as he seeks a fresh start.
