A group of math teachers at Cienega High School encountered criticism after their Halloween costume went viral online. The costumes featured shirts stained with fake blood and the phrase “Problem Solved.”
Turning Point USA initially claimed the shirts mocked the assassination of Charlie Kirk. However, the Vail School District clarified that the teachers had worn the same shirts the previous year for Halloween, and there was no intention to reference Kirk.
“We shouldn’t have worn them, and we shouldn’t have posted it in retrospect, and I have deep sympathy and understanding for all people who are victims of violence, including Charlie Kirk and his family,” said John Carruth, Vail School District Superintendent.
Carruth emphasized that the photo was taken out of context and quickly spread without proper fact-checking, causing significant harm to the teachers involved. No complaints were reported by students or parents before the image went viral.
“The fact that this photo was taken so out of context and spread so quickly without doing some simple fact-checking has been really harmful to them,” said Carruth.
Since the viral spread, the school district and the teachers have received threats from across the country, according to the superintendent.
Summary: A viral misunderstanding over costumes worn by Cienega High teachers led to threats against them despite no ill intent, highlighting issues with online misinformation and rushed judgments.
