On Monday evening, South Philly-born designer Ralph Rucci was honored with the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was presented by iconic fashion designer Thom Browne, alongside celebrities such as A$AP Rocky and Ralph Lauren.
At 68, Rucci is recognized as one of America’s top couturiers. His creations, including weightless gowns and airy slacks, consistently impress audiences at major fashion shows in New York and Paris. Known as the king of tailoring and craftsmanship, his designs have been worn by prominent figures like first ladies Laura Bush and Michelle Obama, as well as celebrities like Martha Stewart.
“It was quite a wonderful evening,” Rucci said Tuesday morning. “It was lovely for me.”
Rucci attended Waldron Elementary and Temple University before launching his successful career in New York. In 2002, he became only the second American designer invited to showcase at Paris’ haute couture shows.
However, in 2014, Rucci lost the rights to his brand name and his extensive catalog dating back to the 1980s due to an unfavorable business deal. Undeterred, he launched a new brand called RR331 in 2019 at Paris’ Hotel Ritz and has since built a made-to-order business based in his New York City home.
The award on Monday night was a meaningful acknowledgment of Rucci’s enduring dedication to his craft.
“It allows me to put things in perspective,” Rucci said.
Ralph Rucci’s lifetime award highlights his lasting influence on American fashion despite setbacks in his business journey.
